about
Black type
Jake Ballis – A Houston, Texas native, has had a profound passion for horseracing from a young age. Jake grew up attending races with his father, who owned several renowned thoroughbreds, including Eclipse, Champion Sprinter, and Millionaire Groovy.
After finishing college at the University of Houston, where he played college basketball, Jake sought a way to get his family back in the horse racing game. Soon after, Jake purchased his first horse, Join in the Dance, and took his family on the ride of their lives to the Kentucky Derby. While Join in the Dance only finished 7th in the Derby, the thoroughbred accumulated $450,000 over her career.
Black Type Thoroughbreds opened as a public syndicate in 2019 and the results have been staggering after our first three purchases! In 12 starts, all in MSW, allowance, and stakes races, Black Type is winning at 41% and finished in the money 66% of the time! Check out some of our success stories from previous Black Type horses below.
